Dolby and Avid Bring Better Sound to TV, Movies, VR, and the Web

Dolby® and Avid® have shaped movies, television, music, and entertainment for more than half a century.

Two years ago, Avid and Dolby announced a partnership to collaborate and co-develop tools for audio post-production. At this year’s NAB Show (National Association of Broadcasters), the two companies made a flurry of announcements regarding tighter integration between Dolby Atmos® and Avid’s Pro Tools®.

The new tools eliminate unwieldy plug-ins and workarounds, bring native Dolby Atmos mixing to Pro Tools, and make it possible to create a single audio mix for all deliverables, from feature films to digital delivery.

“We’ve ironed out a lot of hiccups that made the mixing process cumbersome, and by making workflows easier and more efficient, we’ve freed people up to be more creative,” says Tony Cariddi, director of product and solutions marketing at Avid. “It’s a very solid integration, and the feedback has been fantastic.”

“One of the most powerful benefits of Dolby Atmos is that, as a creator, you can control where the sound comes from with incredible specificity. This precision enables far more immersive sound,” says Cariddi. “It’s really exciting; the energy is palpable.”
